In 2023, Westbury Town Council invited residents and visitors to help shape a new vision for the town centre - an initiative to revitalise the high street and create a more welcoming, flexible public realm. The redesign of the Westbury Rotunda became the first built expression of this wider “Vision for Westbury”, setting a new benchmark for quality, accessibility and civic pride.

A More Open, Adaptable Public Space

Roundfield Landscape Architects were tasked with transforming the Rotunda into a multifunctional space capable of hosting key annual events such as Chilli Fest, the Sunday Brunch Markets and Remembrance Day commemorations. Their new design focused on improving movement, enhancing sightlines and creating a more inclusive environment for everyday use.

The old Rotunda was a high sided structure, with only one entrance.  The high walls enclosed the space and obscured sight lines to the local shops encouraging anti-social behaviour.   By lowering the levels, Roundfield have opened up the area,  and provided better accessibility and visibility to the shops.  The pedestrian flow is now much improved and a rain garden around the existing tree promotes sustainable drainage and helps to support biodiversity.  

Ketley Materials Specified for Performance and Character

To deliver a robust, visually coherent surface for the Rotunda, Roundfield Landscape Architects specified Ketley brown brindle clay Tenger pavers, laid in a herringbone pattern. Their rich clay tones of purply browns and oranges provide a refined finish that complements the new granite blocks which mark out the edges.

The new rain garden forms a central element of the redesign, retaining the existing tree while introducing planting that supports pollinators and improves stormwater management. Ketley light multi quarry tiles and matching round-edge specials  introduce warmth to the retaining walls, their reddish brown clay colours toning with the timber topped bench seating and creating a subtle contrast with the granite blocks.  

A Landmark Reconnected to its Community

The transformed Rotunda now acts as a flexible, attractive focal point for Westbury, one that supports community events, encourages social interaction and contributes to the long‑term rejuvenation of the town centre. Roundfield Landscape Architects’ thoughtful use of quality materials has delivered a high quality scheme, and created a space that is both practical and characterful, rooted in local identity while ready for future generations.
