New blue multi
'Class A' facing brick
A new addition to the Ketley range, blue multi bricks have tones of blues and purples with random flecks of reds and browns. They were originally a by-product of a Staffordshire blue firing, where the reduced atmosphere didn't quite permeate all areas of the kiln, and some of the fired bricks therefore exhibited greater variation of colour than would be expected in a Staffordshire blue. These bricks have been sought after for heritage projects as they have the level of colour variation that one would have seen in the 1900's. With more expertise and fine control of the kiln atmosphere, we are now able to produce whole firings of this authentic heritage brick, though it is important to be aware that product can vary from one firing to another.
Case Studies
76 Upper Ground
This iconic Grade II listed building with its distinctive terraces sits alongside the National Gallery on the Southbank and AHMM Architects were challenged with renovating and extending this bruatlist landmark building. Many of the orginal bricks have been cleaned off and reused, and Ketley's blue multi bricks and special plinth bricks match in so well with the old bricks that it is hard to see what is old and what is new! Bridgnorth Station
Planning permission and listed building consent were granted for a new Station building of demonstrable high quality that would minimise its impact on the sensitive heritage landscape. The new building is in the style of a typical GWR building from 1910 with considerable attention paid to external and internal details, materials and finishes. Ketley Staffordshire blue multi bricks with a natural blue tone and flecks of red annd brown on the face have an antique brindle appearance and were carefully selected to achieve the level of colour variation that would have been seen in this type of brick at the turn of the century. YMCA Building in Wolverhampton
Architects BPN had used a blue brick for another YMCA scheme at West Bromwich and they liked the idea of continuing the aesthetic across this building also. Comparing samples of Ketley's Staffordshire blue multi bricks with the blue brick they had used for the West Bromwich project, the architects found that the Ketley Staffordshire blue multi had more tonal variation. Special Shaped Bricks
Special Shaped Bricks
Because Special Shaped bricks are generally used in situations of severe exposure such as copings and cills, powerful resistance to water penetration and high durability has always been essential.
Ketley Bricks are generally solid and have stood the ultimate test, the test of time. In the early part of the 20th Century their blue colour was regarded as the stamp of durability, nowadays their performance under crushing tests, water absorption and abrasion tests is evidence of this.
The use of Ketley Specials to add a high quality finish to brickwork ensures extra durability and protection to vulnerable areas and will save time on-site by overcoming extensive hand cutting.
