Silvertown Tunnel Portal Buildings by dRMM Architects
Shortlisted in Public, Craftmanship and Brickwork Contractor categories
These two prominent brick landmarks at both ends of the new Silvertown Tunnel have been designed by dRMM architects as imposing gateway markers of strategic infrastructure importance. The curved facade of the Greenwich Portal is made from Staffordshire Blue Double bullnose engineering bricks laid in a flemish bond with recessed headers. At the northern Silvertown portal, a beacon-like copper conical feature is supported by a brick plinth made from matching plain rectangular perforated bricks with recessed headers, also laid in a Flemish bond. AVV solutions used a dark mortar, struck back, which helped to create a chain-link affect across the facades of the 2 buildings. See Case Study>>
Randall Pattern Play Project by Dr Maria Gasparian
Shortlisted in Public and Innovation Categories
This new public artwork designed by Dr Maria Gasparian within the Surrey Lane Estate in Battersea transforms an outdoor space into an inviting and playful outdoor living room. Using both glazed and unglazed bricks and pavers in a variety of brick bonds, Maria has created 2 large sculptural benches and some clusters of modular seating, with game boards such as chess, backgammon and noughts and crosses embedded within the space to encourage interaction and play. The vibrant colours and abstract geometric designs were inspired by the 19th Century Henry Rust Mosaic Tile Company once based on nearby Randall Street. See case study>>
